The Last of Us Part I: Ellie Summer Costume

I am honored, along with many others, to share with you images from “The Last Of Us”, for PS5. During this project I had the great pleasure of being a Character Art Supervisor where I helped lead our incredible team at Visual Arts in San Diego and worked hand in hand with our Naughty Dog family, to rebuild from the ground up and help retell the incredible story of “The Last Of Us”.

While my day-to-day focus on this project was to lead our team and ensure our quality bar never faltered, I did manage to sneak in a little bit of time to craft a few of the characters. The following images are of those characters.

..........................................................................
PLEASE keep in mind, while I may have been responsible for the final look of these characters, I was far from alone in their creation. When it comes to modern day game development, the saying “It takes a village to raise a child”, comes to mind. The amount of people responsible for bringing these characters to life is breath taking. From our incredibly talented teams of: concept artists, directors (shout out to Care and Ashley!), leads, actor/clothing sourcing, scanning teams, blend shape teams, 3d artists (of all the varieties!), TD’s, rigging teams, tech artists (VIVA LA CABB Keegan!), engineers, production, animators, designers, management support, AND IT! ANNNND I’m sure I’m forgetting people. All that is to say, without all of these teams, none of this breath-taking world would be possible! I am proud to have shared a small part in it with you all!

Ellie:
Ellie along with Joel was one the first characters we started on for this project. For Ellie, the pressure to reimagine her at a new bar was high! While at glance, the task to recreate this outfit seems straight forward. The reality in doing so required an incredible level of nuance. From scrawling through countless t-shirts and pants, to settling on mixing the best aspects of multiple garments together in 3d. Pushing this design as to meet the new quality bar, however, still honor its original design was one of the highlights of my career.

Ellie’s head hair, and backpack were created by the incredibly kind, and talented Soa Lee. Where I, along with the help of my trusty (and incredibly talented) side kick, Colleen Larson created Ellie’s Iconic outfit (minus her shoes, that was all Colleen 😊 ).
